Summary

Jackson Blue Spring is a first-magnitude freshwater spring located near Marianna in Jackson County, Florida. The spring is one of the most significant springs in the Florida Panhandle and serves as the primary source of water for Merritt’s Mill Pond, a 202-acre spring-fed water body known for its exceptionally clear water and underwater cave systems. In addition to Jackson Blue, several smaller springs also contribute flow to the pond.

The spring is widely known for its striking blue color and remarkable clarity, with underwater visibility that can extend dozens of feet under the right conditions. Because of its large flow and clear water, Jackson Blue Spring is designated an Outstanding Florida Spring, a classification given by the state to a small group of springs recognized for their ecological and hydrological importance.

The spring lies within the Northwest Florida Water Management District and is part of the broader Floridan Aquifer system. Like many springs in Florida, Jackson Blue is part of ongoing conservation and water-quality protection efforts aimed at preserving these important groundwater resources.

Activities and Access

Jackson Blue Spring is located within Jackson Blue Springs Park, which provides public access to the spring and Merritt’s Mill Pond. The spring basin forms a popular swimming area with cold, clear water that attracts visitors during the warmer months.

Recreational opportunities at the park include:

Cave Diving

Jackson Blue Spring is internationally known as a major cave diving site. Beneath the spring basin there is an extensive underwater cave system formed within the region’s limestone bedrock.

These submerged passages extend deep underground and connect to the broader spring network that feeds Merritt’s Mill Pond. The clear water and strong spring flow make Jackson Blue a favored location for experienced cave divers, and diver training programs are occasionally held at the site.

Cave diving requires specialized training and equipment and should not be attempted by recreational divers.

History

The land surrounding Jackson Blue Spring was once part of Sylvania Plantation, a large antebellum agricultural property established in 1845 by John Milton, who later served as governor of Florida during the Civil War.

Milton spent considerable time at the plantation while governing the state, and historical accounts indicate that Confederate cavalry units were stationed near Blue Spring to provide security for the governor and his family. After the Confederacy collapsed near the end of the war, Milton returned to Sylvania and died there on April 1, 1865.

Although the plantation buildings no longer exist, a Florida historical marker near the spring identifies the site. Much of the surrounding landscape remains rural, and the general appearance of the area has changed little since the nineteenth century.
