Mud Spring is a small, clear spring located in Welaka State Forest near Welaka in Putnam County. Despite the name, this is not a muddy spring in the usual sense. The spring forms a quiet, rounded pool surrounded by forest, palms, and wetland vegetation, with clear water and a gentle boil near the center.
The spring is part of the St. Johns River system. Water from Mud Spring flows into Mud Creek, then toward Little Lake George and the St. Johns River. The site is one of the more accessible spring stops in the Welaka area because it can be reached by hiking trail and, in some conditions, by paddlecraft from the river.
What to Expect
Mud Spring is a low-key natural spring rather than a large developed swimming area. Visitors can expect a peaceful forest setting, a small spring pool, shaded surroundings, and a short spring run. The water is typically clear, although the bottom can cloud if stirred.
The Mud Spring Trail is a relatively easy loop through Welaka State Forest and is a good option for families, hikers, birders, and visitors looking for a quieter alternative to Florida’s busier springs.
Access
Mud Spring can be reached by the Mud Spring Trail in Welaka State Forest. The trail is commonly described as an easy loop of about 1.75 miles, with the spring serving as the main destination along the route.
There is a day-use fee for Welaka State Forest, and basic facilities may be available near the spring area. Swimming has been reported as allowed, but visitors should always check current forest rules before entering the water.
Paddlers may also reach the area from the St. Johns River via Mud Creek, although this route can be affected by wind, vegetation, water levels, and river conditions.
