Summary
Bell Springs is a small, restored spring and trail access area in Columbia County along the Suwannee River, managed by the Suwannee River Water Management District within the Deep Creek Conservation Area. The spring flows from a small vent and runs about a quarter mile to the river. Once dammed into ponds decades ago, the site was fully restored in 2014, and today it’s a quiet, natural area known more for hiking and river scenery than for swimming.
Activities
Hiking
Bell Springs Trailhead connects directly to the Florida National Scenic Trail. The most popular route is the orange-blazed trail heading upriver toward Big Shoals, roughly 1.75 miles one way. Hikers pass through palmetto flats, dwarf live oaks, small seeps, and shaded river bluffs. One reviewer describes this as a moderate, out-and-back hike taking about 3–4 hours. Longer through-hikes are possible toward Little Shoals, Suwannee River Wayside Park, and eventually Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park.
Fishing
Fishing is allowed along the river in this tract, making it a quiet alternative to busier public river parks.
Access
Drivers typically approach from the White Springs area using US-41, then turn onto smaller county roads that lead into a residential cul-de-sac near the conservation tract boundary. From there, a gated entrance road continues a short distance to a small trailhead parking area. Signage is minimal, so using a map app and watching for the conservation area gate at the end of the road helps.
This is a management area, not a developed park, so expect limited facilities and plan accordingly.
