Summary
Blue Grotto is a privately operated freshwater spring and cavern dive site located in Williston, Florida. Known for its clear 72°F water and vertical sinkhole-style layout, it is one of the most popular freshwater scuba training destinations in the state.
Unlike public swimming springs, Blue Grotto is purpose-built for divers and is managed as a controlled-access dive facility. It’s the spring side of an inline sinkhole with three distinct dive areas: an open-water basin, an upper cavern, and a deeper lower cavern. Water temperature remains approximately 72°F (22°C) year-round, and visibility is typically clear.
The site reaches depths of approximately 100 feet (30 meters), making it suitable for both entry-level open water training and advanced deep diving. Reviews frequently describe it as a convenient and well-organized location for instructors working with students, as well as a repeat destination for recreational divers.

Diving Conditions
The dive layout is structured vertically:
- Open-water basin: depths to approximately 40 feet with three large training platforms
- Upper cavern: depths to approximately 60 feet with a wide entrance
- Air bell at 30 feet with air pumped from the surface
- Lower cavern: no ambient light and no direct line of sight to the entrance; requires appropriate deep training and equipment
The lower cavern is not intended for recreational divers using standard scuba gear without proper training. A dive light is recommended for cavern exploration.
Entry is from floating docks via stairs or giant-stride entry. This is a shore/platform entry site, not a boat-access spring.
Divers commonly report freshwater fish throughout the basin and occasionally encounter Virgil, a resident softshell turtle.
