Chassahowitzka River Boat Launch
Chassahowitzka River Boat Launch
Overview
The Chassahowitzka River Boat Launch is the primary access point to Seven Sisters Springs and the upper Chassahowitzka River. Located within the former Chassahowitzka River Campground, the launch provides access for kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, fishing boats, and other small watercraft.
In recent years the campground became the center of a major local conservation story after severe hurricane damage led to discussions about closing or selling the property. Community support ultimately helped keep the campground open, and Citrus County now manages the facility under a long-term agreement with the Southwest Florida Water Management District.
The Story of the Campground
The Chassahowitzka River Campground has long served as one of the most popular public access points on the river. The facility included RV sites, primitive tent camping, river access, boat rentals, and lots of other amenities for anyone wanting to go to Seven Sisters Springs.
In 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton caused significant damage to the waterfront portion of the campground. The front deck, campground store, docks, and boardwalk areas were heavily damaged, leading the Southwest Florida Water Management District to announce plans to close the campground and evaluate the property for possible sale.
The proposal generated substantial public opposition. Residents, paddlers, conservation groups, and local officials argued that the campground was too important to public access on the Chassahowitzka River to lose. Following negotiations, Citrus County entered into a 40-year agreement to operate and maintain the campground while SWFWMD retained ownership of the property.
In 2026, county officials continued pursuing funding for repairs and improvements while keeping the campground open for visitors. Planned improvements included repairs to docks, boardwalks, utilities, restrooms, and other storm-damaged infrastructure. County officials repeatedly emphasized preserving the campground’s “Old Florida” character rather than transforming it into a more developed destination.
