Sally Spring
Sally Spring
Sally Spring is a small but notable spring located along the Chipola River in Calhoun County, Florida. The spring emerges from an opening in limestone beneath a roughly 15-foot bluff on the east side of the river. According to the Northwest Florida Water Management District’s Chipola River spring inventory, the vent is approximately six feet wide and feeds a small pool about 15 feet across before discharging directly into the river.
The spring is located on private property and is not considered a developed public recreation spring. However, paddlers and local spring enthusiasts occasionally spot it from the river during lower water conditions.
A 2004 NWFWMD inventory measured Sally Spring’s discharge at approximately 3.10 cubic feet per second, classifying it as a third-magnitude spring. Water quality measurements taken during the survey recorded:
- Temperature: 20.51°C
- Specific conductivity: 262 µmhos/cm
- Dissolved oxygen: 0.99 mg/L
- pH: 7.7
The spring appears to emerge from fractured limestone along the riverbank, with visible boils and additional smaller discharge points nearby. The surrounding Chipola corridor is known for steep limestone bluffs, caves, swallets, and numerous smaller springs.
Notes
Sally Spring is one of many lesser-known springs identified during the Chipola River basin inventory completed by the Northwest Florida Water Management District. The spring likely receives very little visitation compared with larger public springs in the region, but it contributes to the highly spring-fed character of the Chipola River system.
