Window Spring
Window Spring
Window Spring is a small spring located along the Chipola River floodplain in Calhoun County, Florida. The spring emerges laterally from beneath a limestone bluff and is one of several lesser-known springs contributing groundwater to the Chipola River system.
According to the Northwest Florida Water Management District’s Chipola River spring inventory, Window Spring is located on the east side of the river approximately 0.48 miles south of the Hollis Creek boat ramp. Groundwater flows from beneath a roughly 20-foot-high limestone bluff into a small pool around seven feet in diameter. The report also notes two large karst windows in the bluff above the spring, which likely inspired the spring’s name.
The spring and surrounding land are on private property. Like many smaller Chipola springs, it is most often observed by paddlers traveling the river.
A 2004 NWFWMD survey recorded the following field measurements at Window Spring:
- Temperature: 20.33°C
- Specific conductivity: 236 µmhos/cm
- Dissolved oxygen: 4.86 mg/L
- pH: 7.4
Hydrologic modeling later estimated Window Spring’s discharge at approximately 3.37 cubic feet per second, with simulated flow values near 5.18 cfs. This places it among the smaller but still significant springs feeding the middle Chipola corridor. The nearby USGS monitoring map also highlights the dense concentration of groundwater-fed features in this section of the river basin.
